The Book of Celestial Officials in the Records of the Grand Historian states: “The Seven Stars of the Big Dipper, known as the ‘Spinning Wheel, the Jade Balance, and the Jade Scale,’ regulate the seven celestial affairs. The Dipper is the chariot of the Emperor, revolving at the center, overseeing the four quarters. It divides yin and yang, establishes the four seasons, balances the five elements, shifts the seasons, and determines the cosmic order—all are dependent upon the Dipper.”
